Our next stop took us to Cincinnati, Ohio and a great visit with more family! In this pic is our beautiful daughter Kim and her kids, Ashlee and Hoot. Don't we have the most beautiful kids and grandkids? Prejudiced, you say? I think not! Ashlee and Poppie relaxing! Ash will be a freshman at Lake Erie College in the fall. Very proud of her! She is not only beautiful, but smart too! Hoot will be a senior in high school this fall and also taking advanced college courses! He is scoping out colleges in Florida right now. Quite a bright young man, even if he does resemble a California surfer dude!

Just had to include this pic of the Amish carriages tied up at the hitching post outside a supermarket! The Amish people and how they live still fascinate me. On the road again heading for Wisconsin and more adventures.This is Walt's brother, Tom and his wife, Lynn. We were fortunate enough to be able to spend some quality time with them during our time in Wisconsin. It gave us a chance to catch up on old times. Tom and Lynn were wonderful hosts as well as tour guides. We certainly enjoyed our time with them. Lots of good times sightseeing and good food too! Lynn is a whiz in the kitchen. Best salad dressing in town! She was even nice enough to share her recipe with me! We also met some friends and neighbors of Tom and Lynn's - Bill and Lynn Barrett. Of course that means more food and good times!We girls let the men have some "guy time" alone. They spent the afternoon at Lambeau Field touring the facility and enjoying the ambiance. Walt was especially impressed by the tunnel where the players pass through when entering the field. It is equipped with a sound system that lets you hear the roar of the crowd in the stands.The Wilson brothers outside their empire? Don't know about that, but the ice cream sure was tasty!

We had gorgeous weather during our visit and took advantage of it! We drove up to Door County (how appropriate for Walt) and took the ferry across Lake Michigan to Washington Island. Beautiful scenery, relaxing time. We made a few stops at some of the shops along the way and thoroughly enjoyed our day.

We also got to visit with Tom and Lynn's daughter Dianne, husband and cute little granddaughter, Eleanor. All in all, we had a really great time in Wisconsin! Next stop - Sault St. Marie, Michigan! Our wish for all of you who may read this, is that one day you too will be fortunate enough to live this kind of life and enjoy seeing this beautiful land of ours.

Kenzie and Jacob vacation 6-9 to 6-16

We were very happy to have the pleasure of the company of two of our grandbabies (Jacob and Kenzie) for a short trip. We enjoyed our recent visit to Virginia so much, we decided to share it with them. We went back to Colonial Williamsburg! We also took them to see Fredericksburg, where Grammy and Poppie used to live. Oh yes, they did go to Carl's!What is camping without a campfire, smores and playing in the fire! We really had a fun time and during our trip - mini golf, the pool, swimming in the lake, going to Captain George's Seafood Restaurant, and a scavenger hunt in the campground! We also visited Arlington, VA, and Washington, DC where we took a tour and watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

Jacob and Kenzie were both very impressed with this and the grave site of President John F. Kennedy.

I think they learned a lot.

On our way back to WV after a fantastic week of fun! Looks like two pretty happy, but tired little campers! We hope they enjoyed their time with us as much as we enjoyed having them with us!

Oh yeah, we also visited the airport in DC and watched some jets take off!Jacob was not really a bad boy, he was just trying it on for size! Kenzie says the stockade just didn't fit into her plans! We really had a fun time after the kids got out of jail! Kenzie especially liked the horses pulling the buggies. Unfortunately, we didn't get there early enough to sign up for a buggy ride, so they had to settle for petting them.

Dr. Christopher J. Wilson! Beautiful graduation ceremony at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. We are so proud of him! He will be doing his residency in Dayton, Ohio.Does this look like a proud father, or what?This is our son, David and his family, wife, Ashley and twin daughters, Avery and Olivia! We still have trouble telling them apart! Gorgeous girls!Grammy and the California girls!Two very handsome sons and beautiful daughter, Dawn.Beautiful daughter, Shellie, good looking son-in-law, Jeff and cutie, Jacob at Chris' graduation party!Hey, here is another handsome son, Jeff!Paul, Dawn's significant other, and the kids having fun at Noah and Hunter's birthday party! Virginia May 5th to May 17th

Well, here we are in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. As you can see, Walt can't stay out of trouble! Seems like pretty stiff punishment for such a nice guy, doesn't it? I told him not to "borrow" that horse! Even with Walt's time in the shackles, we still managed to have quite a nice visit! Beautiful weather was very cooperative. I'm just standing by, waiting for my man to do his time! I'll be waiting for ya, honey! But right now, I'm going to go see the sites! Lots to see in this beautiful historic area, set in the 1700s.

I did manage to get in some shopping in this colonial shopping mall! But they wouldn't take my credit card! Cash only! Didn't they have plastic in the 1700s? Like my new hat? I think I may join the drum and fife corps. This beautiful old church is one of the oldest Episcopal churches in America, and still has regular services. The cemetery to the side of the church shows some very prominent and recognizable names displayed on the tombstones. Inside, we sat in George Washington's and Patrick Henry's pews!

Beautiful flower and vegetable gardens like this one, are abundant in Colonial Williamsburg. Tranquil and peaceful to view, but a lot of hard work for the gardeners! I appreciate their hard work, all done with only hand tools. Ahhh yes, Captain George's! The sign does not lie! When you come to Captain George's, you had better wear elastic in your waistband! So you don't care for seafood? Not to worry, this huge buffet has EVERYTHING and lots of it!No, this is not a part of Colonial Williamsburg! This is our beautiful former home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. We also visited our old stomping ground of Fredericksburg, while in the area. We stopped by and visited the new owners too! Surprisingly, they have changed very little about the house. Maybe my decorating tastes aren't so bad after all!We were also fortunate enough to spend time with some of our favorite friends in Fredericksburg, the Serrett family, and Shelva Rhodes!

Actually, I think our Fredericksburg house would fit in here rather nicely!Be sure to check in for our next entry - more fun to come! Live, laugh, love!

Back yard camping at Steve and Stacie's house, Kingston, TN 4-23 to 4-28

Here we are in Kingston, TN. We found the perfect campground! We had a beautifully landscaped lake side site on approximately 6 acres with full hook-ups! We were also fortunate to have some of the best neighbors ever! They even fed us lobster and steak! Actually, we were the guests of our very good friends, Steve and Stacie Hall. I even had a couple of wonderful substitute grandsons to play with! Parker and Peyton made great playmates for us! We played cards, went to a candy store, rode bikes and scooters (Payton gave me lessons on the scooter). The whole family certainly made us feel quite welcome at right at home.We also had the opportunity to participate in one of the Hall's Crispy Kettle Corn gigs! What fun that was! As you can see, Walt got right into his old position of chief popper, while Steve, Stacie, the boys and I bagged and kept the sample tray full! Steve didn't seem to mind one bit and Parker does a wonderful job as cashier. This event really brought back some fond memories for me and Walt. Unfortunately, we had rain later in the day, but all in all we had a good day! This was an opera festival in old town Knoxville, TN. Parker and Walt relaxing in the front yard after the boys put on a funny fashion show for us! Peyton doing who knows what in the background! Peyton has unending energy! Oh, to be young again!Parker and Peyton have quite a nice tree house too! I didn't make it up the rock climbing wall to enter, but Walt managed to conquer the wall and made it up! We spent a week in this marvelous setting and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks for the hospitality Steve, Stacie, Parker and Peyton!

Pigeon Forge, Tennessee 4/28 to 5/2

We moved on to Pigeon Forge, TN after a wonderful visit in Kingston and Knoxville! Let me tell you, the Great Smokey Mountains are a sight to behold! And there is plenty of entertainment to be had in Pigeon Forge and Gatlenburg, TN! So many great shows - just not enough time to see them all! We were fortunate enough to see some of the most popular ones. This one is "Comedy Tonight" - good music and fantastic comedy too.Most all the shows are presented in beautiful buildings and settings nestled in the valley of the Great Smokies. We saw a different show every night and sometimes were able to fit in an afternoon one too!One of our favorite shows was at the "Smith Family Dinner Theatre". We saw a few Elvis impersonators, but this one was the best! The dinner buffet was delicious too! Our friends, John and Robbie came over to spend the night and go to the show with us. They drove over from Asheville, NC. We all had a wonderful time at the show and just hanging out together.

This is one of the camp sites where we stayed in Pigeon Forge. Gorgeous! You can purchase this lovely sliver of real estate for only $200,000! Just bring your own house! Hey, you have to consider all the amenities and you do have an unobstructed view of the Smokeys! There are also beautiful log cabins for sale!

Me, John and Robbie at the Smith Family show. We also took time out for a drive through the Smokey Mountain National Park. Unfortunately, we were too busy looking around at the beautiful scenery to remember to take pictures! The Old Mill area of Pigeon Forge was a delightful experience too. A quaint, old fashioned town with lots of shops and restaurants from the good old days! We especially enjoyed the ice cream parlor and the country store.

Of course, we had to tour the Muscle Car Museum! Walt loves the GTOs! It's not like he never had one.... or two of them. This one looks a little familiar - except ours wasn't a convertible.

Here we are having a delicious lunch at the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant. Beautiful weather for a porch picnic!

Walt always manages to catch me in the most unflattering of poses, like taking pics of me while I'm talking! His excuse is that I never stop talking! This one was taken in a quaint little area of Pigeon Forge, called Old Mill Town. A beautiful area that makes you feel like you are back in the old days. We especially enjoyed the country store and the old fashioned ice cream parlor!

So far on our journey, Pigeon Forge is one of my favorite places. So many things to see and do. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and hope to visit the area again soon. Hey, we have to go back - we didn't even make it to Dollywood!

Next stop - Williamsburg, VA and then on to our old home - Fredericksburg, VA

Music City...Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville 4-17 thru 4-22

Well, here we are in Nashville, TN, home of country music! I had to hold Walt back, he wanted to get on stage everywhere we went! Especially at the Wild Horse Saloon!This is the Ryman Auditorium - the original home of the Grand Ole Opry. Beautiful old architecture! Below is a pic of the Tennessee Titan football stadium.We went to a couple of country music shows and in the campground where we stayed - Two Rivers, we met the road manager and piano player for The Judds! It was exciting to talk to them and hear "inside info" about their experiences on the road with the stars! They have also invited us to join them on the next tour with VIP show tickets! How can we refuse that! The tour starts in November (around Thanksgiving) in Connecticut and ends in Las Vegas. We will probably meet up with them closer to Vegas. Did you know Naomi is really Diana and Wynonna is really Christine? Actually Ashley is really Ashley but not a Judd (different father). As most of you know, we are headed to WV, with a stop over in VA to visit some friends. The road manager actually lives in Virginia Beach and wants us to contact him when we get there to attend an informal jam session with some other country musicians while we are there. We are really excited about this! I have received regular emails from them since we left Nashville! Tooooo Cooool!This is a pic of our RV with the Judds road manager's RV right behind us. His RV used to belong to the Judds, they bought it in 1995. They have several Prevost tour buses now! They would rather travel in this old RV because the Prevost RV's are equipped with about 10 bunks and a bathroom with no shower and no slide outs. Would you believe Naomi and Wynonna started out in just a car! Wow, who says there is no future in country music!

Red Bay, AL

Here we are in Red Bay, Alabama - The Home of "Tiffin Motorhomes". These are pictures of the office and manufacturing facilities of Tiffin Motorhomes. As you have probably figured out, this was the birthplace of our home on wheels.This is Main Street Red Bay! Looks a little like Plains, GA, doesn't it? Except Red Bay has two traffic lights! In these pics it looks like some interesting shops, however most of them are out of business - unless they are owned by the Tiffin family. This is the world famous "Swamp Johns" restaurant in Red Bay. The best catfish in the land! Notice the gas pumps out front? Yes, it used to be a gas station. Dinner is served in the oil change bay! No matter the outside, good eats inside! Don't miss it if you are in Red Bay!This is our accomodations at the Tiffin RV park in Red Bay. We left the pollen in Alexander City and got plenty of dust here! It will take us a week of cleaning to remove the pollen and now the dust too! The weather was quite warm and we had a good time, even with the dust. We had a few extra touches added to our home, by master cabinet maker Chris Berry, during our stay in the area. He does beautiful work!This is one of the traffic lights in town. Brown sign directs you to the Tiffin RV park.This, as you can see, is the Allegro Club. It is exclusively for owners of Tiffin Allegro motorhomes. Yes, we pay annual dues and even get a newsletter for the privilege of entering into these hallowed halls of Allegro merchandise!

Wind Creek State Park, Alexander City, AL

This is our little home in the woods of Alexander City, AL. It was a beautiful park right on Lake Martin. We enjoyed our stay there eventhough the pollen was horrendous! Our black Ford Explorer suddenly turned yellow! The lake was lovely, but had an ugly yellow scum covering on it. The house belongs to our friends Greg and Sandy Stafford. They were not there while we were, however Walt did make a house call to do an electrical switch fix for them while we were in town. I neatened up some of Sandy's flower gardens while we were there.Here we are relaxing around our campfire - no smores in sight!Walt is never far from his phone.... think he was getting orders from Greg!This is some of the beautiful wisteria growing in abundance around the area. The foliage of dogwood and wisteria was gorgeous!We enjoyed our time in Alabama, especially the restaurants! The thing we were anxious to get away from was the HEAVY pollen. Fortunately, the evening before we left we did get some rain.

Plains Georgia

Well, here we are in Georgia! Home of former President, Jimmy Carter and the Peanut! On Saturday we took a sightseeing train through a few small towns in central Georgia. The towns have some historical significance and include stopping in Plains. As you probably know, Plains is where President Jimmy Carter grew up and still currently lives. He and his wife Rosyln still live in the only house they ever owned. On Sunday, President Carter teaches Sunday School at the local Baptist church.

This is a picture of downtown Plains, Georgia. The community displayed pictures taken in 1925 and I swear, they could have been taken yesterday. The building below was Jimmy Carter's headquarters during his presidential campaign. Small, but none the less, a national landmark.

This is a picture of Jimmy Carter's boyhood home. It is furnished as it was when he lived there. To the right of the house is a clay tennis court where Jimmy and his father used to compete in tennis matches. The Carter family also owned a small store next to the house, which was only open on Saturdays.

It was a long day and I thought I would take the opportunity to catch a couple of ZZZZ's. I guess Donna had a good nights sleep the night before because she certainally looks more wide awake than I do. We were in the first class section with tables. However, the seats in coach class were more comfy!

Donna, looking a little more tired. After all, she did walk all the way down Main street in Plains! The train cars that are used were manufactured in 1949. The train is operated by the National Park Service and is operated mainly by volunteers. It was a very relaxing and scenic trip and we would recommend it to anyone who is in the area.

Lake City, Florida

Well, here we are in lovely Lake City, Florida as we continue our journey northward. On our way to find an interesting (non-franchised) place for dinner, we gave the town a brief tour. We like to try to find local eateries as often as we can, to get a taste of the local fare. For my interest, we stopped by an antique shop, which turned out to be mostly junk but still fun to look at! Some of the things bring back memories, especially when you see something and remember seeing the same thing in your grandparents house! As you can see, Walt usually goes for the older technology of tvs and cameras. Not to mention this old tv tube tester!

Remember when tvs had big tubes in the back? When the TV would screw up, we would take the vacuum tubes out and go to the drug store and check them on this machine. When you found the bad tube, you would replace it with a new one and everything worked fine. Walt was also drawn to these old coke machines - some of which he has fond memories of how to sneak drinks out of! Just give him a straw or a church key and a cup! No more thirst!

Lake City also offers a small museum in an old house where they proudly display momentos and artifacts of times gone by in the community. The picture of the outside of the museum actually reminds me of a house my grandmother (Bootie) used to live in, in Poca, WV.

Above is a picture of an antique slot machine. Big M always looks for the 5 cent machine, I bet this one is just for her.

Lake City was also home to the first J.C. Penney store in the state. All in all, it is a quaint, friendly little town and we enjoyed our visit very much. Now onward - northward!Soon we will venture on to our next destination - Georgia!

Blue Angels

As you can see, we recently went to an air show. The show was at MacDill Air Force Base, in Tampa, Florida, Sat. 3-20-10. It featured the Blue Angels. The technology put into these planes is amazing and the training of the pilots is unbelievable. The precision is nothing short of perfection. The entire show is pure art! If you ever get the opportunity to see this performance - do! I promise you, it is worth every minute of your time. Today was a gorgeous day to be out! The temps were in the high 70s with a light breeze and the sky was beautifully clear. We not only saw a fantastic show, we also put in a lot of walking - just what the doctor ordered for both of us! We shared the day and activities with our good friends Joe and Marcia Jones. They are full-time RVers too. They are presently residing at MacDill AFB. After the show, we went out for Mexican food. Although Mexican is not one of my (Donna) favorites, this was quite good! Good friends, good food = good times!

Today, Sunday 3-21, was a quiet day for us. We stayed in, did laundry and made homemade veggie soup. Not much fun going anywhere when it rains all day. We are about ready to "hit the road", finally! We will be leaving the Tampa area Sunday, March 28th. We plan to slowly travel north toward and through Alabama, Tennessee, east to Virginia, north to Pennsylvania and end up in West Virginia by the end of May for Chris's graduation. When we leave WV, we will head out to Ohio, Indiana, up to the Chicago area, on to Wisconsin and then wander our way out west. We hope to see Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone on our way up to Seattle. From there we will work our way down the coast all the way to southern California. We will keep you posted on our adventures! Anticipation!

"Big Daddy" Don Gartlets

Many readers have no idea who Big Daddy Don Gartlets is. Back in the 60s he was the hottest thing in drag racing. He broke many track records including being the first person to exceed 200 MPH in 1/8 mile! Not 1/4 mile but 1/8 mile. Talk about G force!

Don has a drag racing museum and a classic car museum in Ocala Florida. Attached are a few pictures of some of the items in the museum and a few of the wilder cars.

After we visited the museum we had linner at Outback steakhouse. Donna has been talking about steak lately so we had one at Outback and I will be doing some Rib Eyes on the grill today. That should conclude her need for steak and we can get back to chicken.

After we had linner we drove around Ocala and on the way home we stopped at an antique mall. I always like looking at the old magazines. Ads for old free standing TV's in color and you can even get it with remote control! Ad's for '57 Chevy's selling for a little over $2,000.00. Wish I had 10 of them.

The weather here has been extremely cold. Most mornings we wake up to frost on the car. The highs have been in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

We are in Bushnell, FL now and will be returning to the Brandon area again next weekend. I have a physical with the VA the following Monday and Donna has an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic in Ft. Lauderdale the following Thursday, for her leg problem. We will be staying around the Brandon area until the weather starts getting back to normal. In the worse case, we plan to start heading North by the end of March.

We were down in Wauchula, Fl yesterday camping at Thousand Trails, where we are members. They have 400 sites. 200 are on high ground with full hook ups and 200 are on much lower ground with water and 30 amp electric. We were planning on staying until Monday but we had two problems. The first was, we couldn't get CBS there and that means we would watch re-runs of some old shows when the Super Bowl is on. That is never going to happen. Yesterday afternoon we had a great linner at a local Italian restaurant. After we left and headed back home, it started to rain like crazy. Water was building up all around the RV and we were parked on grass. We decided we had better get out of there before the RV sinks in the mud. The RV weighs about 35,000 lbs. and even though it has a lot of neat accessories, one of them isn't 4 wheel drive. We unhooked the utilities and hitched up the car in the middle of a Florida downpour with no end in sight. We didn't know where to go, so I thought we would try a nice paved Wal Mart parking lot. Donna didn't like that idea, so instead, we just headed for Lazy Days Campground. We wound up on a site with full hook ups, a paved site and CBS.

Monday we will go to Bushnell which has an Escapee's (we are also members) park and stay there for about 2 weeks. We will be baby sitting or should I say bird sitting for our friends Joe and Marcia. They are flying to Kentucky for a week to take care of a few things concerning their new RV.

We will be back around our old stomping grunds (Brandon, FL area) for the month of March.
We planned it this way because we have a rental house there, that we thought was going to be vacant and we needed to be in the area to get it re-leased, but I signed a new lease with the tennant today. We will be heading north on our journey as soon as the weather up there improves.

Monday 2-1-2010

Yesterday we decided to go to the TECO (Tampa Electric Co.) power plant in Apollo Beach to see the Manatees. They like to go there because of the warm water. TECO has one side of the pier blocked from the other to keep the warm water in. One side is 66 degrees and the other side is 82 degrees. There were many Sting Rays jumping out of the water but they are too quick to get a picture. Here are a couple of pictures of the Manatees. We went with Joe and Marcia Jones who are also full time RVers. They have been full time since 2007. Joe and Marcia just bought a new Kountry Star motorhome and are moving all their "stuff" from a storage garage to their motorhome. Believe me, that is not an easy task.

After we went to see the Manatees, sand crabs and Sting Rays, we went to Circles for linner, (lunch and dinner combo) The meals were fantastic and we all had a great time. After we ate we went to MacDill Air Force Base and visited the commissary and did a little shopping. We got in because Joe and Marcia have a pass. Marcia had a very persistant cough and chest congestion. She is going to visit a doctor today.

We didn't go with our original plans to leave Florida in November. We were tied up with doctors because Donna had her left leg swelling and didn't know why. She visited 16 different doctors, had 3 blood tests, an MRI, CT scan, X-ray, 5 doppler tests.... The end result? She will live but the cure is unknown.

We are going to leave Florida in late March and head up through Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Chris will be graduating from Medical school the end of May. It's been a long dedicated haul for him and we are very proud of his accomplishments. Now we get free medical advice.

After we leave West Virginia we will head toward Chicago with some stops along the way. We will visit Kim, Ashlee and Hoot in Cincinnati, I want to go to Elkhart, Indiana and see the RV Hall of Fame. After we leave Chicago we will head up to Wisconsin and work our way across the country to Seattle, WA. After that we will work our way down the west coast. We will visit David, Ashley, Avery and Olivia in Bakersville,CA. After that, we will work our way across the country via the southern route back to Florida.

The pictures in the last post were from our recent trip to West Virginia. We stayed at Fox Fire resort and had the family to the RV for a cookout on Saturday and many returned to go to the water park on Sunday. Everyone had a good time. We left WV on the following Tuesday and drove to South Carolina and spent the night. The next day we drove all the way to Orlando. The drive was extremely challenging all of the way. The rain in spots was extremely hard and the wind was blowing like we were in a hurricane. Instead of going straight home, we spent a few days at Thousand Trails in Orlando and drove home on Saturday.
We are planning another trip to northern Alabama in October and in mid November we are going to the Atlanta area for Thanksgiving, a little vacation and some work. In between we will be going to Sun and Fun in Sarasota, FL with some friends for a few days and a rally in November and one in December with Suncoast Allegros. Suncoast Allegros is a local chapter of the Allegro Club which is the manufacturer of our RV.
Well I'm still trying to get the hang of this blog stuff so I will sign off for right now.

We decided to set up a blog so everyone can read what's going on, see pictures etc. When we begin to travel full time, it will be a great way for everyone to share in our adventures and to make sure we didn't drive off the edge of the earth.
